The 300 kW pilot connects surplus solar power with manufacturing fuel demand, highlighting an industrial application aligned with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has commissioned its first green hydrogen plant at its Manesar facility in Haryana. The electrolyser pilot uses solar electricity generated during holidays that would otherwise remain unutilised. Hydrogen is stored and subsequently blended with natural gas for use as process fuel in manufacturing.

The company plans to draw on the pilot’s learnings to expand green hydrogen adoption across its facilities in Haryana and Gujarat. 

Manufacturing competitiveness and carbon intensity

Discussing India’s emergence as a manufacturing powerhouse, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said: “its competitive position may not depend solely on cost and quality, but also on CO₂ intensity.”

The pilot forms part of a broader clean energy programme through which the company aims to reduce its manufacturing carbon footprint from 615,000 tonnes to 266,000 tonnes by FY 2030–31 - approximately 57%. That ambition covers multiple clean technologies, rather than the hydrogen plant alone.
